Our Mission

The Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP) is a private, non-profit housing and community development organization dedicated to assisting low income Albemarle County and Charlottesville City residents to have the opportunity to live in safe, decent and affordable housing. AHIP will pursue its mission by facilitating programs and services, and assisting low income families and individuals to acquire and/or maintain a home. It is the conviction of AHIP that the opportunity to live in adequate shelter is a basic human right.

is a 501 (c)3 non-profit established in 1976.

Over the past 30 years AHIP has completed over 775 housing rehabilitations, built 40 new homes, performed over 1150 emergency repairs (since EHRP was established in 1987), and has assisted more than 75 families in becoming first time homebuyers.

is licensed by the State of Virginia as Class A Contractor classified in Building, Electrical, and Plumbing.

Is certified and licensed by the State of Virginia as a Lead Based Paint Abatement Contractor.

Employees 11 full time, year round, crew members, 8 administrative staff at the main office, 1 part time Volunteer Coordinator, and 2 administrative staff at our Park's Edge office.

Is recognized and certified by the State of Virginia as a Community Development Housing Organization (CHDO).

Helped to preserve Albemarle County's affordable housing stock by purchasing, renovating, and managing Park's Edge Apartments, an 8 building 96 unit complex in Albemarle County. In addition, a new 4000 sf community center was built to bring social services and educational opportunities directly to the residents.
