Emergency home repair
The Emergency Home Repair Program takes care of minor but urgent repairs that, if left undone, would threaten a family’s health and safety.
The program serves low-income families in Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville.
The Emergency Home Repair program allows AHIP to:
- repair exposed electrical wires
- replace a sparking receptacle
- repair a faulty water heater or replace it altogether
- patch a leaking roof
- fix a broken pipe
- reinforce or replace loose balcony or stair railings
- reinforce or replace dangerous stairs
- replace a broken door or window
- install or replace smoke detectors
- install a grab bar or handicap-access ramp
- repair or replace a failed window air-conditioning unit
- make general mobile home repairs
- and much more
This program is largely supported by generous local funders, including the County of Albemarle, the City of Charlottesville, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band, Wachovia Foundation, and Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. It is also supported in part by funds from the state of Virginia.

If you live in Albemarle County or the City of Charlottesville and are interested in this program, please call Lynne Morris at 434-817-2447 x21. She will ask you a few basic questions to find out about your repair needs and if you qualify. There is currently a waiting list for this program, but we try to address true emergencies as soon as possible.
other repair programs
AHIP’s Housing Rehabilitation Program operates in Albemarle County and Charlottesville, and in Greene County when housing needs include indoor plumbing or septic system overhauls. Rehab clients must be homeowners, and must live in the home that is to be repaired.
